Alabaster

Technological data about the alabaster in Cintruénigo (Navarra) Spain.

The specialised craftsmanship type of labour has made such rare characteristics as the different locations of the quarries and the workshops in two which have a very distinct, history and yet, are the same time very closely related sentimentally (Navarra and ARAGON).

Working the quarries is a strenuous, uncertain job, but the tenacy of our people enable till-lorries to arrive at  our town -Cintruénigo- with its precious load of large blocks of stone (food for our factories) where they are immediately passed along to the different sawing, lathing and cutting departments. Later the assembly and finishing departaments will put the final touch to a complicated, craftmanship production job.

As general rule, there are two types of Cintruénigo alabaster. One, called white stone, which is taken mostly from Fuentes de Ebro area, and another, called transparent, whitch is removed, almost in its entirely, from the ALBALATE area. In spite of the fact that these varieties exist, there are sometimes innumerable "black veins" running througth the stone, which contribute to making it more beautiful and natural, especialy in those stones which are treated with artificial colouring.

The hardness of stone ranges from 2.2 to 2.7 on the Mhor scale. Hence, it is easily worked by hand. The alabaster is principally destined for use as a decorative object, thereby enhacing, thanks to its nature, the beauty of the place where it may be displayed.

ALJUNA Alabaster has its own quarries, in Albalate del Arzobispo -Teruel, where it is situated the factory nº 2
